Today, on the nationwide day of action to Stop Stupak and protect full health coverage for women, we have learned that an equivalent amendment is being planned in the Senate by Republican Senator Orrin Hatch and Democratic Senator Ben Nelson.
The Stupak amendment and the proposed Hatch/Nelson amendment would eliminate access to private health insurance coverage of abortion for millions of women. This turns the clock back, taking away coverage that many women have now, coverage that even the Republican National Committee provided to its employees! The restriction would especially impact low-income women, who are more likely to buy into a federally funded plan, and less likely to have extra funds to pay for an abortion that is not covered. Even medically necessary procedures, such as selective termination, which save lives would not be covered under these amendments!
We cannot allow these harmful amendments to make it into the final health care bill! Contact your Senators today and ask that they oppose the Hatch/Nelson amendment, and any amendment to the health care reform bill that would restrict women's access to full health care coverage, including abortion.
Call your Senators at 888-423-5983 or 202-224-3121, and then call Senator Nelson and make sure he knows that women won't support a candidate who won't support us!
