The California NOW PAC has endorsed Heather Fargo in the Sacramento Mayor's race, and Sacramento NOW has been working to help her in the campaign against Kevin Johnson.
Two allegations have repeatedly dogged Kevin regarding inappropriate sexual misconduct with teenage girls.
The first allegation occurred ten years ago in Phoenix. The police report is available online. In it, it states that a 16 year old girl met 29 year old Kevin and thus began a mentorship-like relationship. Kevin then began a sexual relationship with her. She eventually told her therapist because it felt wrong to her, and her therapist – a mandated reporter – brought this to the attention of the Phoenix Police. The police then set up a phone call between victim and perpetrator but were unable to get Kevin to incriminate himself, although he did admit that “the hug may have been more intimate than it should have been…but he didn’t remember them being 100% naked.” It recently came out in the news that Kevin paid the victim $230,000 to keep quiet.
The second allegation occurred a year ago. Kevin was President of St. HOPE Academy, a Sacramento charter school that he helped start. A student at the school approached her teacher and complained that Kevin massaged her breasts. She says that he has done this with other students as well. The teacher immediately reported this to the school authorities. Instead of reporting it to the police within 36 hours – like the law requires of mandated reporters – Kevin Johnson’s private attorney and personal friend privately questioned the girl. After this interrogation, the girl recanted her story. It was reported to the police as the Sacramento Bee stated “Long after the 36 hour period.” At least one St. HOPE Academy teacher quit in protest of these actions. Federal agents are also looking into Kevin Johnson’s and St. HOPE Academy’s mishandling of this and other situations.
Additionally, an investigative report by the Sacramento Bee that took place long before Kevin Johnson announced any plans to run for mayor, sheds a light on his failures to revitalize Oak Park and his well-earned reputation as a slumlord. In it, the Chief Code Enforcer of Sacramento states that Mr. Johnson is “one of the neighborhoods most frequent city code offenders.”
